A reliable supply of drinking water is essential for outdoor activities. However, it is difficult to take all the water you need for drinking, cooking and first aid on trips that last several days, meaning that you would eventually need to refill your water from sources along the way. Even visibly clean water in the most pristine environment can be non-potable due to contamination with microorganisms (bacteria 0.2 – 5 micron, viruses 0.02 – 0.2 micron and protozoa 1 – 15 micron), chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, etc. Still, water from almost any source can be made potable by filtration (to remove sediment particles), microfiltration (to remove bacteria and parasites), sterilisation, chemical treatment and absorption. Sterilisation of water by boiling is an old trusted method, but requires energy that you might not always have, and does not remove sediment from murky water or all harmful chemicals.
Specialist shops sell all-in-one filter devices which combine filtration, microfiltration and absorption of water by the same product and produce potable water almost instantaneously. If necessary, this can be followed by treatment with disinfectant tablets (containing chemicals such as chlorine dioxide, silver or iodine)(Katadyn – Micropur, BCB Oasis) or with ultraviolet light (SteriPen). This two-step approach covers the entire span of water purification processes and results in potable water in a reasonably short time (10 minutes to 2 hours) for use by an individual or a small group of people.
