Australian Photographer Series: Harold Cazneaux

Self-portrait (1904) and right: Doris Zinheisen (1929) by Harold Cazneax.

Left: The bamboo blind (1915) and right: Bush fire haze, Mount Talbingo NSW (1932) by Harold Cazneax.

Harold Cazneaux (1878-1953) is one of Australia's most influential photographers. Light and natural poses dominate his pictures in contrast to the darkness which was popular in European photography at the time. Although both his parents worked in a studio, the young Harold was more interested in drawing. In 1898, however, he visited John Kauffman's exhibition and realised that he could use the camera as a tool to create impressionistic pictures. In 1909 he held Australia's first solo exhibition. He spent most of the decades to follow working from his home studio and custom-designed garden. Harold was the official photographer for The Home magazine and later worked on many other books and magazines. From the mid-1930s he turned his attention to Australian landscape and remained true to the declaration he made with the rest of the photographers from the Sydney Camera Circle to embrace Australia's unique light and landscape. More of his works can be seen here.

Olive Cotton, 1930s (by Max Dupain)              Tea-cup ballet, 1935 (Olive Cotton)             Windflowers, 1939 (Olive Cotton)

Olive Cotton is one of the women pioneers of Australian modernist photography. From an early age, her parents instilled in her a love for arts and at 11 her father gave her her first camera, which she used to record the beauty of the nature around her, a life-long object of inspiration for her photography. She met Max Dupain in 1924 and the work in his studio played a major role in developing her photographic skills. When Dupain was called to war service in 1942, she took over the management of his studio for three years. Her first solo exhibition was only in 1985, after interest in her work was reignited, and Olive spent one year selecting and reprinting negatives from more than 40 years-worth of photographs. For the rest of her life, Olive never stopped taking pictures that capture the delicate and serene beauty of nature.

The doors of Max Dupain's studio opened in 1934 and he continued capturing life in his native Sydney during his 60-year career, creating some of the most memorable images in Australian photography. His pictures followed ideas in modern European photography and were mostly black-and-white, with high contrast and dramatic lighting from the strong sunlight typical for Australia. In the 1960s Max found his passion in architecture photography and for the rest of his life he continued using his photography to document the transformation of Sydney in a cosmopolitan city.

Australian Photographer Series: Narelle Autio | Trent Parke

Narelle Autio                                                                    Photography by Narelle Autio

Narelle Autio was born in a beachside suburb in Adelaide, South Australia and grew up dreaming to be a painter.  She graduated from college with a visual arts degree and spent the early 90s as a photojournalist in the UK. In 2000, she worked with partner Trent Parke on the highly recognised project 'The Seventh Wave' which showed the typical Australian beach culture in a series of black and white photos. Narelle's love for painting shines through her pictures, where Australian everyday life is captured from the height of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, under the breaking ocean waves or in the still life of objects found on the beach.

Trent Parke                                                              Photography by Trent Parke

Trent Parke is the first Australian to be invited in the prestigious Magnum Photos group. Trent started photography at a young age and has won several international awards for his photojournalism. Together with Narelle Autio, he worked on the 'The Seventh Wave' project and spent two years driving around the continent so that 90 000 km later he and Narelle could present contemporary Australia in the 'Minutes to Midnight' exhibition. In Trent's pictures, no matter whether they are taken in the busy CBD or backstage at the Sydney Opera House, time seems to come to a still in order to draw attention to the moments and stories that unfold all around us, but so easily go unnoticed in our hectic everyday life.
