The Euxinograde palace, close to Varna, was built in 1882 as a seaside summer residence for the Bulgarian monarchs. The palace is surrounded by a park, considered an object of gardening and park art. The park is a specific ecosystem of over 300 plant species, most of which are not found elsewhere on the Balkan peninsula, but were originally imported from Istanbul, Hungary, France and Italy. The palace grounds also include mineral springs and a vineyard with region-specific grapevine sorts that are used by the Euxinograde cellar.

Perth, Australia/
One of the most isolated cities in the world, and also the fastest growing big city in Australia, Perth is the main stop-over before exploring the rest of Western Australia. Perth has the most hours of sunshine than any other capital city of Australia, boasts beautiful sunsets over the Indian Ocean and Swan river and a spring carpet of wildflowers unique to this part of the world.

Milford Sound, New Zealand
Milford Sound is located in the Southwest of New Zealand, a two hour drive from the small town of Te Anau or several days of hiking through the mountains. It is part of Fiordland, the largest national park in New Zealand and can be explored by taking one of the mountain treks, by a scenic flight or a boat which shows visitors the length of the 16 km fiord. The boat trip passes by the Stirling and Bowen waterfalls, which are fed by melting glaciers in the mountains and reaches the mouth of the fiord at the Tasman Sea. The pyramidal Mitre peak is often shrouded in clouds and the heavy rain in Fiordland forms a layer of freshwater on top of the salty waters of the fiord, creating a unique ecosystem in which deep ocean flora and fauna inhabit the relatively shallow waters of Milford Sound.

The science behind the benefits of wine and chocolate
The health benefits of red wine have been known and remain undisputed for centuries, but it was only in the late 1990s that a chemical in wine, resveratrol, was named as the ingredient which gives wine its beneficial properties. Resveratrol is highly concentrated in the skin of red grapes, and other plant products such as cacao and mulberries. Scientists started experiments with yeast, fruit flies and other model organisms and found that resveratrol increased their lifespan, similarly to a calorie-restricted diet. In experiments with rodents, resveratrol does not have an effect on logevity, but gave the animals higher endurance to physical exercise and decreased obesity. The chemical seems to delay the onset of age-related diseases such as Alzheimer's, cancer and type II diabetes. To a large extent, these disorders are caused by a slowing down of the cellular repair mechanisms with age, especially in mitochondria, parts of the cell responsible for energy generation. It is in these power-stations that resveratrol seems to regulate the action of molecules called sirtuins. In new research published in the science journal Cell, resveratrol directly targets phosphodiesterases, a group of enzymes which regulate the activity of the small signalling molecule cAMP, important in the response to stress, cold, fasting or physical activity. The new findings might help to design new drugs that like resveratrol can target phosphodiesterases and slow down the development of age-related disease.

The wild relatives of crops have increased genetic diversity in hot climate
Wild
grasses growing in hot and arid areas of the world might hold the genetic key
for pest resistance in crops. A research team led by Prof. Robert Henry at the University of Queensland
investigated genetic diversity of wild barley populations in Israel and weeping ricegrass, a wild rice
relative in Eastern Australia. In a PNAS article the scientists report that wild grasses from hotter and drier
environments are exposed to a larger diversity of disease-cuasing
microorganisms, but also contain more diverse genes to cope with these
pathogens. Small changes, called SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) in
their disease resistance genes mean a more diverse population of plants, and
thus a higher chance to have the right gene variant that is affective against a
particular pest. The same genes, but less diverse, are present in the
descendants of wild grasses, the modern-day crops such as wheat, barley and
rice. While global warming has a negative effect on the yield of crops, their
wild relatives have had to adapt to constantly changing harsher environments for
hundreds of years and seem to cope better with increasing temperatures. The
scientists hope that a better understanding of these wild grass populations and
their genetic diversity may be mimicked in crops to increase their fitness in a
world with a changing climate.

Lunar mineral found in Western Australia
After the landing on the Moon in 1969, the three astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins brought back probes from the rocky lunar surface around the Sea of Tranquillity where their spacecraft landed. The probes contained three minerals that had never before been seen on earth. Within 10 years after the Apollo 11 mission, two of the minerals, armalcolite (named after the astronauts) and pyroxyferroite were found on our planet as well. The only uniquely 'lunar' mineral that remained was tranquillityite. In a recent article in the science journal Geology, scientists from Western Australia report the discovery of terrestial tranquillityite. Professor Birger Rasmussen from Curtin University was using electron microscopy to look at a piece of rock from one of the oldest geological regions on Earth, the Pilbara in northwestern Australia, when he noticed possible tranquillityite inclusions. His discovery was confirmed by colleagues at the University of Western Australia in six other Australian rock samples, which contained tranquillityite with the same chemical composition and crystal structure as the one found on the Moon. According to the scientists terrestial tranquillityite took so long to be discovered because traces of water (which is not present on the Moon) would cause changes in the mineral composition. The mineral has also been used to date more precisely the Pilbara rock formations which were believed to be 820 million years old, but have now been re-estimated to have formed more than 1050 million years ago.

Aoraki/ Mount Cook, New Zealand
The Aoraki/ Mt Cook National Park, a part of the Southern Alps, has some spectacular nature to offer. The Maori name of the highest mountain peak in New Zealand comes from a legend about three brothers, the sons of the sky-god, whose boat got stuck in a reef. The cold southerly wind froze the boat into New Zealand's South Island, and the brothers turned into the three highest peaks in the area. Aoraki/Mt Cook is the highest at 3754 m, but the national park encompasses another 18 peaks that are over 3000 m high. The short walk from Mt Cook village to Kea Point leads to the Mueller Glaicier terminal lake and its turquoise waters and offers a stunning panorama of Aoraki/Mt Cook, the Hooker Valley and Mt Sefton. The path reaches close enough for you to feel the icy air of the glacier and hear the snow grinding its way down the hill.

Melnik, Bulgaria
Melnik is
the smallest town in Bulgaria,
situated in the southwest corner of the country in the Pirin mountain. The town
is famous for its architecture and wine made of a unique local vine cultivar,
grown on the sandy sunny shores of the Struma
river. A short trek outside Melnik winds its way through the sandstone rock
formations called the Melnik Pyramids and naturally ends with a glass of red
wine in one of the cosy cellars in the town.

Vitosha Mountain, Bulgaria
Our last source of inspiration is a late autumn walk through Vitosha Mountain, in the foothills of which the Bulgarian capital of Sofia is nestled. Starting from Aleko Hut, and winding through the nature reserve Bistrishko Braniste, Mt. Yarlov Kupen and down to the village Jeleznica, this is one of our favourite mountain treks and serves us as a regular reminder that in nature no two moments are the same.
